How Do I Take a Lab Test?

You will be happy to know that this is one test that does not require you to study. Some tests have pre-testing requirements but most laboratory tests are accurate any time of day. Follow the guidelines below to help make the best of your lab test experience.

  1. If at all possible, use the same lab each time you have testing done. Some tests are performed with different methods and if you are monitoring your cholesterol or a thyroid hormone (amongst other tests), you want it to be tested consistently.
  2. Be sure to ask if your test requires that you be fasting. A cholesterol, triglyceride, HDL, (lipid panel) require a 12-14 hour fast. A glucose level will require a minimum of 2 hours fasting.
  3. Never ever deny yourself water for a lab test. Moderation is the key. There is no point causing yourself other problems by getting dehydrated!
  4. Wear clothing with short sleeves or loose sleeves that can make access to your arm easier.
  5. Never tell the person collecting the blood they look bad BEFORE they get your specimen (just kidding!). I'm just testing to make sure you are paying attention.
  6. Thank your laboratory professional profusely and throw lots of money (sorry, just another test...).
  7. Find out when you should call your doctor's office for the results.
  8. It is very important that you contact your doctor for results. Regulations prevent us from giving this informaton directly to the patient.
  9. Last but not least, ask your doctor for a copy of your results. You paid for them, you should have them. It is a good idea to compare your results time to time to see if you are heading on an upward trend in your lipids or other lab tests that are routinely monitored.
